Video: New School Protesters Beaten, Arrested (Again)

Video: New School Protesters Beaten, Arrested (Again)

There's not much background on this video depicting the violent arrest of a demonstrator last night, but it's still a bracing way to start your day. New School students and their comrades had brought the ruckus downtown to show solidarity with students at the University California, who are occupying various administration buildings on multiple campuses to protest budget cuts and an increase in student fees, among other grievances. According to one student protest blog, last night's demonstration included activities like "dropping banners off of statues and buildings, crashing New School art parties and decorating the city in solidarity with all...

B&H Photo Video Sued For Gender Bias

B&H Photo Video Sued For Gender Bias

It is not a good week for businesses ending in "&H" — first the H&H Bagel owner was indicted on tax fraud, and now word is getting out that the Hasidic-run B&H Photo Video is being sued to the tune of $8 million in a gender bias discrimination lawsuit. According to the NY Times, the two unrelated cases were announced just 30 minutes apart yesterday. In the B&H lawsuit, filed at the State Supreme Court in the Bronx, four women (one of them a current employee, the others former employees) charged that they were denied sales positions because of...

Pet Worth: This Month's Highly Adoptable Animals

Last month, we launched our first collaboration with the Washington Humane Society and highlighted a handful of dogs that needed to find a home. The WHS's goal to "increase adoption, decrease the number of animals in need, and teach responsible pet ownership" is one that we truly believe in, and we're happy to report that two of the dogs we featured in October, Tancho and Nina, found homes!! Nina's new owner saw our photos and knew that she was the right dog for their family. She now lives with a family of five, two young children, two adults and another...

New Whole Foods to Open Up Exactly Where it is Needed Least

New Whole Foods to Open Up Exactly Where it is Needed Least

Photo by Maryland Route 5 Gotta concur with DCmud's sarcasm in reporting this piece of news concerning an expected ribbon cutting next year for a new Whole Foods at the Shops at Wisconsin Place development, located at the Chevy Chase/Friendship Heights nexus. While the Bethesda-Chevy Chase corridor may seem like a scripted stage setting for the Whole Foods phenomenon, Chevy Chasers have until now had to drive all the way down to Tenley for their organic Gruyere, or eke by (gasp) on Giant or TJ's foodstuffs.Ruth Samuelson made a handy little map over at Housing Complex to illustrate the point:...

16-Year-Old Confesses To Shooting That Caught Girl In Crossfire

16-Year-Old Confesses To Shooting That Caught Girl In Crossfire

Suspects: At left, Carvett Gentles (image from WCBS 2), and, at right, clockwise from top left, Rohan Francis, Dwayne Taylor, Clivie Smith, and Cleve Smith (images from NY1) A 16-year-old boy has confessed to the Monday afternoon shooting that left a Bronx girl in a medically-induced coma. Carvett Gentles, a sophomore at Bronx Leadership Academy who rarely attended class, had no criminal record before this week, and police believe that's why the .40-caliber pistol used in the shooting was passed to him, in a street version of "hot potato." The four other young men who were with him Monday...

Sexual Harassment On Subways An "Underreported Crime"

Sexual Harassment On Subways An "Underreported Crime"

Photograph by Dave Surgan on Flickr Today, NYPD Chief James P. Hall, who heads the department's Transit Bureau, told the City Council that sexual harassment was the "No. 1 quality of life offense on the subway," according to City Room. Hall added, "This should not be a part of commuting in New York. t's an under-reported crime." (Nothing, unfortunately, new there.) Some stats: There have been 587 reports of sexual offenses on the subways (374 of those reports were in Manhattan), with 412 arrests. City Room says that of the arrests, "71 had committed prior sexual offenses and 14...

Upscale Chelsea McDonald's Just Waiting For Its Michelin Star

Check out the lipstick on this pig factory farm cow: McDonald's Corp. spokeswoman Danya Proud says this McDonald's location on Sixth Avenue between 14th and 15th streets is the first in the nation to get a so-called "urban redesign." It has free Wi-Fi and laptop outlets, upholstered vinyl chairs instead of seats bolted to the floor, subdued lighting, and all-black uniforms for employees. The metrosexual look is, naturally, de rigueur in Europe, but like something out of another world for us boorish Americans. One customer tells the Associated Press it's "beautiful" and more "like a lounge"—but with the same revolting...

The Weekly Feed: Experimentation Edition

The Weekly Feed: Experimentation Edition

Photo by NatalieMaynor Dish of the Week: Sweet potato casserole Thanksgiving... foodie holiday... blah blah blah. But of course, it is my favorite holiday, not just because of the food, but because of the focus on family. My mother is a fantastic cook. She makes the best scallion pancakes. Her technique is so flawless that family members can tell the difference between the pancakes she rolls out and the ones my aunts roll. But sometimes my mom likes to "experiment." Now there's experimentation within reason, substituting brown sugar for white sugar, adding a touch of almond extract to a...

Jack Evans Hops Aboard a SmartBike at Bike Lane Unveiling

Jack Evans Hops Aboard a SmartBike at Bike Lane Unveiling

Image courtesy DDOT We've been following the work on the new 15th Street NW contraflow bike lane for a while now, and today the District Department of Transportation and Mayor Fenty hosted a little ceremony to announce its formal completion. But we have to thank IMGoph for tweeting to point out that one of the images DDOT sent around from the ribbon cutting features Ward 2 Council member Jack Evans (D) aboard one of the city's SmartBikes. We're used to seeing the likes of Fenty and famed cycling enthusiast Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) on bikes, but Jack Evans? He...
